History knows him as Cyrus. The bible mentioned him as Koresh, the Koran calls him Dzulqarnain, for he was known as the King Of the World that has ruled in the east and west and can penetrate light and darkness at the same time. He lived in the fifth century BC.
In the book Alfathul-baari fi syarhi Sahih al-Bukhari, Ibnu Hajar included a narration from Ubaid bin Umair that Dzulqarnain performed Hajj pilgrim on foot and met the Prophet Ibrahim.
A similar story from Atha and Ibn Abbas narrates that Dzulqarnain entered the Grand Mosque and greeted Prophet Ibrahim and shook hands with each other. According to the narration it was the first handshake to become a tradition in meetings. Dzulqarnain and Prophet Ibrahim were the first to shake hands and were witnessed by thousands of people.
There is also a narration by Ibn Abi Hatim from Ali bin Ahmad that Dzulqarnain came to Makkah and saw Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail building the Kaaba.
Due to the presence of the above narration, some scholars such as Ibn Taimiyyah believe that Dzulqarnain lived during the time of Prophet Ibrahim, which is around 2000 years before Christ.
As from the reference of Ahlul-bayt whose chain of the information reaches Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, also narrates a similar story with some extra explanation, he said:
Dzulqarnain went to perform Hajj with 600 thousand cavalry. When he entered the forbidden land (Makkah), some of his companions followed him to the house of God. When leaving Baitullah, he said: "I saw a man whom I have never seen as more luminous than him." They said, "He is Khalil ar-Rahman (Prophet Ibrahim) God peace be upon him."
Dzulqarnain said, "Put on the saddle!" So they saddled 600 thousand horses as quickly as they saddled one riding animal.
Then Dzulqarnain said, "No, but we should walk to meet Khalilur Rahman." So Dzulqarnain walked on foot and all his soldiers in respect until he met Ibrahim.
Ibrahim asked him, "how did you cut the time?" Dzulqarnain replied, "With eleven sentences (prayers):
1. Subhaanallah man Huwa Baqin la yafna (Glory be to Allah Who is eternal and will not perish).
2. Subhaana man Huwa 'Alimun la yansa (Glory be to Him who knows and never forgets).
3. Subhaana man Huwa Hafizhun la yasquth (Holy is He the Guardian Who will not fall).
4. Subhaana man Huwa Bashiirun la yartab (Glory be to Him Who sees and never doubts).
5. Subhaana man Huwa Qayyumun la yanam (Glory be to the One Who continuously takes care of His creatures and does not sleep).
6. Subhaana man Huwa Malikun la yuram (Glory be to Him, the Unsurpassable King).
7. Subhaana man Huwa 'Azizun la yudham (Glory be to Him who is mighty and invincible).
8. Subhaana man Huwa Muhtajabun la yura (Holy One Who is veiled and cannot be seen).
9. Subhaana man Huwa Wasi’un la yatakallaf (Glory be to Him Who is wide-ranging in His mercy and does not bear hardships).
10. Subhaana man Huwa Qa'imun la yalhu (Glory be to the One who stands on his own and never hesitates). 11. Subhaana man Huwa Da'imun la yashu (Glory be to Him who constantly takes care of His creatures and never neglects them).
If we analyse the above narrations with many other references such as the verse of Qoran 18:84;
إِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهُۥ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ سَبَبًۭا Surely We established him in the land, and gave him the means to all things.
We'd understand why when Prophet Ibrahim met Dzulqarnain the first he asked; "How do you cut the time? Namely how you fold the earth or conquer space and time? It clearly indicates that Dzulqarnain is not from the same time. Prophet Ibrahim lived about 1500 years before him and he knew that Dzulqarnain came through teleportation, crossing space and time to perform Hajj from the future.
Cyrus Dzulqarnain returned to the early days when he saw Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail building the Kaaba and wanted to be present as an Imam leader who led the Hajj with his people in the early days of formation when there were still not many people.
Prophet Ibrahim asked so that people know and learn that it can be done. A pure and pious soul like the saints can do that.
The human soul is essentially not limited by space and time that binds the body. The eleven sentences of the tasbih spoken by Dzulqarnain have been the mediator of the teleportation effort, but the "machine" is the spiritual power of his soul that guides.
Did the thousands of pilgrims who were with him also know that they had crossed space and time? wallahu A'lam.
We have already discussed and re-reviewed the history and the meanings ephitet of Dzulqarnain at the beginning of our book chapter 4. How it is amazing like the miracle of Ashabul-kahfi the seven sleepers and their awakening. The subject of this short note becomes clearer in the 4th - 6th chapter of our book Misteri Alkahfi & Khidir that was published last year in Indonesian language.
